PhD Candidate, UCLA · Historical Sociology of Elites
I study elites in the contexts of empire, war, revolution, and coups.
My dissertation examines the micro-foundations of the British Empire, focusing specifically on the army officer corps. Drawing on extensive archival records, I trace patterns of mobility in and across the empire at the turn of the nineteenth century, making use of both comparative-historical and computational methods. I also work on Egypt and the broader Middle East, exploring how military and political power are constructed, legitimized, and exercised.
In 2021–2022, I was a visiting PhD student at the University of Cambridge. I was also previously a summer associate and adjunct policy researcher at the RAND Corporation, contributing to reports on military veterans in the United States.
My research has been published in Comparative Political Studies. I have also written for the London Review of Books, New Left Review, Middle East Report, and Foreign Affairs.
